The city of La Malbaie now includes the former municipalities of Pointe-au-Pic, Rivière-Malbaie, Sainte-Agnès, Cap-à-l’Aigle and Saint-Fidèle. One of the favourite tourist destinations for more than two centuries now, the region of La Malbaie has always pleased its visitors.
Located along the St. Lawrence River, Pointe-au-Pic is the birthplace of vacation in Canada. In the beginning of the 20th century, the high society of New York, Toronto and Montréal was coming by steamboats to get some rest in Murray Bay and the Manoir Richelieu. Some wealthier visitors even built summer residences, some of which are still private houses today, while others have become charming inns and bed and breakfasts. In Murray Bay’s immediate area, you will find a golf course, which is one of the oldest in the country, as well as a promenade, which runs along the bay up to the parc du quai Casgrain. The Pointe-au-Pic area is also a place where you will have access to panoramic stairs that will lead you to the hotel Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu and the Casino de Charlevoix. There, customers can do a large number of outdoor activities like golfing, horseback riding, skiing or snowmobiling. On the site, you will also find restaurants, boutiques, complete sport centre, a health centrer as well as an ultramodern conference centre. A little farther on the chemin du Havre, the Musée de Charlevoix presents the permanent exhibition “Appartenances”, which traces back the history of Charlevoix through works of art, objects and old photographs.
In the Rivière-Malbaie area, located between La Malbaie, Clermont and Cap-à-l’Aigle, the Mont Grand Fonds invites you to try its ski resort while the Camping des chutes Fraser offers you many campgrounds near these impressing 55-meter-high waterfalls, a mini-golf and picnic areas. A little farther, the Forge-menuiserie Cauchon, located on the edge of the Malbaie River, houses more than 200 home-made tools and will allow you to relive 120 years of history and to understand the role of the blacksmiths in the beginning of the 20th century. Two days a week, it is possible to meet a real blacksmith who comes work on the site.
It’s in the Sainte-Agnès area that you will find the church built in 1844 inside which scenes from the soap opera “Le Temps d’une Paix” were shot. In the Rang Sainte-Philomène, the monastère de la Croix glorieuse houses a contemplative monk catholic community. The church and the outside of the monastery can be visited at any time and visitors can also attend a mass. The Maison du Bootlegger is another attraction you will want to visit. Built in 1860, this residence was a gathering place for those who wanted to drink alcohol at the time it was forbidden by religion and was banned in the United-States. In order to trick the authorities, the owners of the house modified the different rooms and created a real labyrinth. You will be surprised by this residence filled with secret doors, hidden bars and private rooms, all linked by secret passages. In the attic, the clandestine club Le Club des Monts, composed of notables, often gathered together. Many prestigious guests have visited the place, even Richard Nixon and Elvis Presley. Today, it hosts a restaurant and proposes animated evenings. But be careful, if you visit this house, do so with the help of a guide or else you may get lost!
Finally, the Cap-à-l’Aigle area houses the largest private garden in Canada, les Jardins “Les Quatre Vents”. Covering about 20 acres, this site has 40 gardens right next to one another. In the flower gardens like the Jardin Blanc, the Roseraie, the Allée de Vivaces and the Allée des Oies, you will be able to admire particular colours, forms and textures, and to discover a very interesting variety of plants. The Jardins “Les Quatre Vents” offers breathtakingly beautiful scenery and many exceptional plants that will please both amateur and professional horticulturists as well as visitors. Another similar park is the Jardins du cap à l’Aigle, which houses about twenty plant beds with all kinds of flowers, as well as a part of the lilac collection from the corporation Cap-à-l’Aigle Village Lilas. The Centre écologique de Port-au-Saumon, for its part, is a summer camp that will let you discover the natural marvels of Charlevoix. Several activities are proposed like astronomy, ornithology, whale-watching excursions, marine mammals specialized camps, swimming, climbing, archery, and more. Aquariums are even installed near the shore and will allow you to observe and even touch starfish, sea urchins and anemones.
