Baie-Saint-Paul

The most important municipality of the MRC is Baie-Saint-Paul, nicknamed “the artists’ paradise”. Indeed, many artists like Clarence Gagnon, Marc-Aurèle Fortin and Jean-Paul Lemieux, to name only a few, immortalized the wonderful scenery of this region in their paintings. It’s in Baie-Saint-Paul that you will find the largest number of art galleries and handicraft shops in Canada. To admire the pretty houses with mansard roofs, walk along the narrow little streets surrounded by welcoming sidewalk-cafés. At the end of Sainte-Anne Street, the Baie-Saint-Paul’s quay offers cruises and sea kayak or canoe excursions. Right next to it, you will find a lovely beach and a little wooded area, as well as an bird watching path that will please walkers. If you feel more adventurous, the Sentier Les Florents, which you can take either by foot, snowshoe or ski, will lead you near the hinterland’s mountains.

The tourist information office houses the Centre d’histoire naturelle de Charlevoix, which presents the exhibition “Charlevoix, un destin venu du ciel” (charlevoix, a fate coming from the sky). You will discover how the impact of a meteorite shaped the territory of Charlevoix - one of the largest craters on the planet - as well as all the natural sites that should be visited in the region. On Saint-Jean-Baptiste Street, the Maison René-Richard is a museum and a hundred-year-old art gallery that formerly welcomed artists such as Clarence Gagnon, Marc-Aurèle Fortin and René Richard, and which displays their work. A little farther, the Jardins Secrets du Vieux-Moulin invites you to discover remnants from the past and the heritage treasures. Accompanied by a guide, you will start your visit by picking a card that will reveal the profession you are attributed for the day. You will then visit the site with your friends or your family and play the role of a 19th century craftsman. On the site, you will see a stone-flour mill, a butcher’s shop, a grain shed, a tobacco curing shed, a barn-cowshed, a wool-fulling machine and the ruins of a very old sawmill.

After your visit, why not drop by the Laiterie Charlevoix – Économusée du fromage, which has been making cheese since 1948? You will be able to witness the production stages, visit the interpretation center and taste the different products! Then visit the Domaine Charlevoix, which is a family tourist park that offers a plethora of outdoor activities. From the Félix-Antoine-Savard terrace, you will have a view from above on Isle-aux-Coudres and an access to another terrace located at the footstep of the cliffs. A hiking trail will lead you to a beach and five waterfalls. Other trails will lead you to the Maison du thé, located in the heart of the forest near a lake. Finally, at the end of your tour, stop at the Carrefour culturel Paul-Médéric that offers several different cultural exhibitions, animations and activities, and the exhibition centre that, for its part, presents modern and contemporary art exhibitions and events. All kinds of art (painting, sculpture, photographs, engraving and multimedia) have the place of honour!
